A Void Matter: Contemporary Dance Performance By CONNECT 2 Pre Professional Dance Training Program Students In Bangalore
On the occasion of Graduation Ceremony of CONNECT 2 – pre professional dance training program in Bangalore – Meeraqi makes its students stage a contemporary dance performance named A Void Matter on 26th May 2018 in JSS Auditorium at 7:00 in the evening.
This contemporary dance performance is a study on sadness. It is a moment to come together to understand the negative potential of our destructive minds and heal ourselves cathartically. Just come to feel deeply and vulnerably.
In today’s distorted times, dark things keep happening and keep getting bundled up in stacks of newspapers that ultimately get sold for a few metallic coins. Are we going to continue being this so-called evolved species that doesn’t bother about anything at all? How long can we continue like this? The problem is that we are living in a state of protected ignorance that is slowly gnawing off our insides. We aren’t realizing the impact of this boxed way of living and loving where we put ourselves at the mercy of insignificant things like religion, politics, technology and popularity; all of which are man-made constructs. We need to wage a war against our own mechanical intellectual prowess in order to establish its counterpart – sensitive intelligence – at an equal status of authority.
For some odd reason, we as specie think it honorable to come together in times of joy and celebration but not in times of sadness and grief. All this grief gets accumulated within us and we really don’t know how to handle it or else how to express it.
Imagine an iron burning a shirt, slowly it will burn it through, stink up the place and ignite a fire. This is exactly what is going to happen to us as well. This production is a cry to stand against that imminent fire and come together for once as a community that can heal its members. Believe it or not, we have the supreme power to heal the state of humanity in one single night if we want to, by joining our souls and wavelengths together in a state of lucid dreaming. And once we connect through emotions of all kids without any bias against any of these emotions, we will open up many doors of repressed feelings that are regurgitating to come out.
These feelings are stuck in our throats like vomit that needs to come out to clean our systems. We need pure and thorough cleaning to gain a broader decision on the lives we have created for ourselves. This is a dark piece that will make you cry, howl and test your own emotions discovering how much you can feel. It is not just a piece that happens on the stage for the pleasure of your eyes but also an experiment on what you feel, and that energy will make the piece come alive. Without you, we standing on the stage are a lost cause that needs someone to listen to the version of the life we see.
It might be grueling and painstakingly hurtful, but we at Meeraqi believe that it’s time we stop ignoring and really start feeling the injustice that is there all around us in issues of gender, sexuality, rape, money, power, religion, politics, consumerism, commercialization, social media, popularity and a lot more in this destructive list which goes on and on indefinitely. These are destructive times and we want to pinpoint our individual responsibilities in it.
Meeraqi is an organization; an arts space that deals with today’s prevailing problems and brings them to the surface through arts. It understands that if we live in ignorance, we will forever be detached from and remain unaware of our true potential as mankind. It doesn’t ignore the problems but reveals them in the most poignant ways possible that will shake your conscience.
We had started our second pre professional dance training program in Bangalore called CONNECT in January and our dancers have grown multifold at all levels. As part of their graduation ceremony, we would like to invite you to their show in JSS Auditorium on May 26th. It is not going to be an evening of ease and comfort, we must tell you. This is not going to be an entertaining production that will alleviate your headache or your mood. In fact it is not even just going to be a dance performance done as per the rules of aesthetics in the strict sense of it. In fact, this is going to be discomforting, eye opening and moving performance of physical theatre that explores the idea of grief. It is an attempt to make the people in the auditorium truly unite as one emotion and find solace in the terror of it.
It is going to be an unusual adventure of horrible images that will evoke a certain sense of sorrow and responsibility in each and every individual sitting in the auditorium. It is time we come out of our luxurious blinded lifestyles and face what we have made of the world. It is time we fight against commercialization, excessive consumerism and the injustices on little girls in the world who are being used for political motives. However it is not an activist form of theatre. It is a cry to just come together and be vulnerable towards one another, to truly listen and then slowly open our eyes and see all that exists around us in a new light.
If you want to immerse in a state of lucid dreaming, surrealistic thinking and existentialism, come and witness the catharsis of this production. And since the movements are meditative and stirring, they will evoke a certain sense of energy that will cover the entire auditorium like a war zone where you will be feel the rubble under your feet, the smoke in the atmosphere and the stench in the air.
And if you want to experience the conditions of the entire world inside one single space with a bunch of dancers who are going to express their intentions through physical movement and even strange dream like images, please come and be part of us. As for Meeraqi, we will continue to graduate immensely talented batches of dancers who don’t just learn dance but gain a different outlook towards life and are capable of communicating their thoughts through different performative or even writing mediums. Meeraqi is truly a place of creators and feelers who will go against the wind of the world, set up their sails and swim through the storms that the world is currently caught in.
